Preest (Ryan Phillippe) is a masked vigilante detective, searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Esser (Bernard Hill) is a broken man, searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London’s homeless. Milo (Sam Riley) is a heartbroken thirty-something desperately trying to find a way back to the purity of first love. Emilia (Eva Green) is a beautiful art student; her suicidal art projects are becoming increasingly more complex and deadly. The film is a split narrative set simultaneously in contemporary London and in a future metropolis on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.
The UK release for Franklyn is February 27th. The US release is still to be determined. I have a feeling that the “convenient” similarities that Preest has to Rorschach from Watchmen is causing some hesitation for a release in the US. It will be interesting to see how the studio handles this and how audiences interpret the character and film. So far the reviews from premieres and early screenings vary from visionary/ intriguing/ stunning to a poorly done V for Vendetta or The Dark Knight. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Below is the Featurette & Trailer for Franklyn. Enjoy!
