Michel Gondry has signed on to direct the Seth Rogen starring/written The Green Hornet! Rogen will play the wealthy playboy Britt Reid / masked crime fighter / Green Hornet. The film was at risk of a production death after original director Stephen Chow left the position. However Chow is still attached to play Kato, Reid’s Chinese assistant who’s ultimately the badass of the team.
Gondry’s presence to the film insures that this won’t be your average super hero flick and will add even more character to a genre that doesn’t need formulaic directors stepping in to ruin their history. Ahem…Brett Ratner hmmm hmmm…Tim Story, goodness excuse me! Chow is the mind behind Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle which had a visual style and approach outside the normal form and one they are looking to add to The Green Hornet.
My personal favorite of Gondry is the dreamlike Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. It’s really exciting to see such talent being tapped to take this project on. It defiantly ups my interest in the project and adds anticipation that was lacking until this news. The most satisfying part is that Gondry himself courted the prospect by putting together a proposal for the executives and producers at Sony which apparently blew them away.
Sony has slated the release for June 25, 2010.
