  • First Pics of Peter Jackson’s Lovely Bones

    By | April 20, 2009

Empire and USA Today both got a hold of two new images of Peter Jackson’s next film The Lovely Bones. Based on the Alice Sebold’s best selling novel, The Lovely Bones follows Susie  (Saoirse Ronan) a 14 year old teenage girl who is raped and murdered by her neighbor. She then watches from heaven as her family and friends deal with her death and her murderer tries to hide the evidence all while coming to terms with her own death.

Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz play Susie’s mother father, Stanley Tucci the murderous neighbor and Susan Sarandon the family’s grandmother. Peter Jackson is directing from the adapted script penned by himself along with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

“I found the book to be curiously optimistic. I felt inspired by Susie’s struggle to come to terms with her own death. In the face of overwhelming grief, she finds hope. She holds on to love, and by doing so, she transcends the horror of her murder” said Jackson.

Even though the film partially takes place in “heaven”, Jackson also had this to say, “It’s God-less in the sense that when Susie dies, she finds herself caught in a place between Earth and heaven — she is in an ‘In-Between,’ as Alice Sebold calls it.” When she moves on, “we’re happy for audiences to imagine this new world in whatever way makes them comfortable.”
