Jackie Earle Haley now has real estate on Elm Street since signing the dotted line to star as the stalker of nightmares, Freddy Krueger for New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes’ rewind of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing with John Ricard co-producing. Samuel Bayer will be directing the Wesley Strick script, with shooting beginning next month in Chicago.
New Line made the decision last year to reintroduce the series centered on “The Springwood Slasher” Frederick Charles Krueger. Freddy haunts the dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep. Robert Englund played the original Freddy in the 1984 original film which spawned nine films and two TV series which was New Line’s largest franchise until Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings series.
Since the success of New Line and Platinum Dunes’ rehash of, Friday the 13th has grossed over $65 million domestically it was inevitable to bring another horror icon out of retirement.
Jackie Earl Haley was last seen starring in Watchmen as Rorschach and will next be seen alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the Phoenix Pictures produced Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese. This is probably the best casting choice in remake/re-envisioning/rebooting history. Jackie Earle Haley is one of my top 10 actors at the moment and this has really changed my view and excitement level of this release.
