Welsh actor Michael Sheen has battled Vampires as Lucian the lycan (werewolf) leader in the Underworld series. Now he has agreed to enter the realm of vampire in New Moon, the sequel to the fan obsessed Twilight.
Sheen has made a name for himself for his realistic portrayals of known figures in several Oscar-winning films such as The Queen, Frost/Nixon and The Damned United.
His biggest payday yet has now come with a reported 7+ million to star as Aro in New Moon. Aro is the leader of an Italian vampire clan called the Volturi.
Sheen’s casting was confirmed by Director Chris Weitz on Sunday. Weitz explained that he had “aggressively pursued the actor”. He continued with, “Michael’s role is so important because he’s the head of all vampires. Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, but beneath that he is a tremendous threat.”
Twilight has raked in $191 million domestically and $380 million worldwide in box-office totals. The series has also spawned a cult following fan base that has held countless Twilight parties and developed numerous fan websites.
The Twilight series of three books sold 27 million copies in 37 countries last year alone which outsold the Harry Potter series.
New Moon is currently slated for a November 2009 release.
