After testing the proverbial waters in last weeks X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Twentieth Century Fox is moving forward with developing Deadpool in an X-Men spin-off that will star Ryan Reynolds who played Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In a Marvel Comics reference, Deadpool is described as “a mix of Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds”, so I guess this was a bit prophetic minus the dog DNA.
Deadpool nicknamed “Merc with a Mouth” is a mercenary dying of cancer who submits himself to the Weapon X project which cures his terminal illness by injecting him with Wolverine’s regenerative healing factor. Deadpool is left disfigured and mentally unbalanced, emerging an indestructible anti-hero. Reynolds has been associated with the character since they tryed to develop this into a movie back in 2003.
Deadpool will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel while Fox also has the wheels turning on a Wolverine sequel following the samurai storyline from the comics. Let’s not also forget that Fox is also developing a Magneto origin film and possible X-Men: First Class.
Ryan Reynolds will next be seen in The Proposal directed by Anne Fletcher due June 19, and has just completed Paper Man directed by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.
Who will be the next mutant with a cameo to get their own film?
