Today director Jon Favreau was cleared to release the fist pic of villain, Ivan Vanko aka Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) in next summer’s Iron Man 2. The character is a Russian weapons designer who constructs his own suit that includes a pair of whips that are powered by the suit’s glowing chest piece similar to that of Iron Man’s.
“The technologies are definitely related, that’s part of the core theme of the film.” says Favreau. “Whiplash is going to light them up,” Rourke adds.
The image below is Whiplash showing up at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. Favreau and the rest of the crew are maintaining high confidentiality, as they did with the first film when it comes to the plot. It is still unclear if Whiplash will be a weapons designer for Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), a competitor of Tony Stark/Iron Man, as he is in the Marvel comics.
“We like to play into and against the expectations that people might have, so we mixed it up a bit” says Favreau.
It was Rourke’s impressive performances in Sin City and The Wrestler that convinced Favreau that he was the best choice to go up against Robert Downey Jr. in the follow-up to last year’s $318.4 million grossing hit. “It was very important that the villain be as compelling as can be. Once I thought of Mickey in that role, it made me understand how to shape the story.”
Iron Man 2 opens May 7th 2010. Enjoy the first pic of Mickey Rourke as Whiplash below:
