This past weekend (Sunday August 16, 2009 to be exact) was the Red Carpet Premiere of Robert Rodriquez’s Shorts in Austin, TX presented by Warner Bros., Troublemaker Studios, and Graves, Dougherty, Hearon, & Moody. I was covering press for the event held at Austin’s historic Paramount Theatre and had my 7 year-old stepson join me for the family geared event. I must also add that he was my photographer for the press shots on the red carpet featured in this article.
SHORTS: Starring Jimmy Bennett, Kat Dennings, Trevor Gagnon, Jon Cryer, Leslie Mann, William H. Macy, James Spader
Eleven-year-old Toe Thompson is the designated punching bag for the bullies of the suburban community of Black Falls, where his and everyone else’s parents work for Black Box Industries, makers of the do-it-all gadget that’s sweeping the nation. But during a freak storm, a mysterious Rainbow Rock, which grants wishes to anyone who finds it, falls from the sky. Suddenly, the neighborhood that Toe already thinks is weird is about to get a lot weirder. As the Rainbow Rock ricochets around the town—from kid to kid and parent to parent—wishes-come-true quickly turn the neighborhood upside down in a wild rampage of everything from tiny aliens to giant boogers. From Robert Rodriguez, director of “Spy Kids,” comes a magical fantasy adventure told through a series of shorts that each brings to life the sometimes wonderful, often terrible, and totally out-of-control wishes that become far more than Toe and his neighbors ever imagined.
The Shorts Premiere was open to the public who were able to purchase $30 reserved tickets that included admission into the premiere and a complimentary family carnival on Congress Avenue only for the audience of the premiere. There were also $125 VIP All Access Badges which included premium theater seats, a private dinner in the VIP Lounge at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel overlooking the carnival, and limited edition collector’s items. The really awesome thing about this event, was that all the proceeds went to benefit Thoughtful House Center for Children in Austin, TX, (the only center of it’s kind anywhere) who is fighting to recover children with developmental disorders (autism, PDD, Asperger syndrome, ADD/ADHD, and NLD) through the unique combination of medical care, education, and research.
Stay tuned for a review on the film, and enjoy the pics below:
The entire event was a blast for young and old alike and also led to Tristan and I meeting the awesome Danny Trejo (Halloween (2007), the Spy Kids series, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Heat, From Dusk till Dawn), who is the second cousin of Robert Rodriquez and is the star of his next movie Machete, which is currently filming in Austin.
Machete is an expansion of a mock trailer Rodriguez directed for the 2007 film Grindhouse Planet Terror. This will be Danny Trejo’s first lead role starring as the title character which will also star Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey, Steven Seagal, Jessica Alba, and Rose McGowan.
