The low budget but high quality sci-fi picture District 9 took the top spot at the box office this past weekend, with director Neil Blomkamp’s baby taking in $37 million in US ticket sales on a $30 million budget.
The very disappointing G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, took the second place spot in it’s second week, dropping 58.9% with $22.5 million in totals. The three spot was earned by The Time Traveler’s Wife with $19.2 million in sales from female fans of the book and dudes who got suckered into a movie date night.
In negative news, The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard (Jeremy Piven) only made $5.4 million, while Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo only took $3.5 million, both in their first week of release.
On the other end of the spectrum, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is pacing to the $300 million mark, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made progress towards $400 million. Check out the full top 10 chart below:
