SXSW FILM FESTIVAL 2010
By JP Chapman | March 13, 2010
SXSW is upon us! And so is the traffic…
I unfortunately am going to miss most of the action the first few days of the festival, and will be really getting into the swing of things come Monday. However; I did manage to make it downtown for the premier of Kick-Ass with SLSS founder, Dave. The line for the film stretched around the block, and then some, but both Dave and I were able to secure great seats for the screening. And wow….did it not disappoint.
Filled with crass language, over the top violence, and all-around offensiveness, it was….AWESOME. Such an unexpectedly great start to the festival, and one that managed to pull away from the exorbitant price paid for parking due to Dave’s poor navigation (and we not only live in this city, but are downtown…..a lot). Director Matthew Vaughn, as well as stars Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Clark Duke (of Hot Tub Time Machine fame) were all on hand for the screening, Q&A, and after-party at Austin’s own Buffalo Billiards.
Kick-Ass was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in a movie in quite some time, and I really hope that the public accepts it, in spite of all the offensive subject matter.
Following the screening, Dave and I attempted to make it into the early preview of Predators, but quickly gave up after seeing the length of the line on hand. Instead, we made our way to the aforementioned Kick-Ass afterparty, where we ate free cookies, and stared at, but refused to approach, Christopher Mintz-Plasse. An all around good time…
Over the remainder of the weekend, I’m looking forward to Cyrus, The People v. George Lucas, Hubble 3D, Saturday Night, and a handful of others. Keep an eye out for a review of Kick-Ass to follow.
