SXSW FILM FESTIVAL 2010
By Dave Campbell | March 19, 2010
With SXSW Music rocking elsewhere downtown, SXSW Film was being rocked on Thursday March 18th, by the premiere of The Runaways. Twilight star Kristen Stewart and accomplished actress Dakota Fanning graced the the red carpet with director Floria Sigismondi and the lead singer of the Runaways, Cherie Currie.
The Runaways follows Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock’ n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. The Runaways chronicles Joan and Cherie’s tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as the band starts to break out.
The Runaways opens in theaters on April 9th, 2010, and stars Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga, Adventureland, Into the Wild) as Joan Jett, Dakota Fanning (The Twilight Saga, Coraline, War of the Worlds) as Cherie Currie, and Academy-Award nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead) as Kim Fowley, the band’s controlling manager.
