A film by Psycho Beach Party director Robert Lee King starring Beth Broderick (Psycho Beach Party, Sabrina the Teenage Witch), Chris Mulkey (Twin Peaks), Ryan Hansen (Party Down, Veronica Mars), Vincent Ventresca (Dollhouse), and Whitney Able (Monsters)? Hell yeah! Sign me up!
I had no doubts going into Bad Actress that the plot would be incredibly outlandish and the performances would be goofy as all hell — and I was pretty spot on, because like Psycho Beach Party, Bad Actress is essentially a B-movie. I do have a real soft spot in my heart for B-movies but I think I enjoyed them much more when the production quality was as sorrowful as the plot. Nowadays, B-movies look just like any other HD video production, and that seems to really affect my opinion on them. (For example: Robert Rodriguez’s Machete) I think if Bad Actress was shot on gritty 16mm film or severely degraded videotape, I might have loved it. Instead, I just liked it…
Don’t get me wrong, Bad Actress is funny and enjoyable. I laughed quite a few times and all of the performances — especially Beth Broderick and Chris Mulkey — are fantastic. There was just something that did not seem right to me and I guess I am just pinning it all on the cinematography and production design.
