Lost in all the Batfleck batsuit hoopla was the news that X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed to Total Film that Channing Tatum will be playing Gambit in future X-Men movies. Point goes to DC. Point definitely deducted from former Gambit actor Taylor Kitsch.
“Well you know he’s a rogue, Channing. He’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau, and he can handle the action, we all know that. He’s got a really good heart, because I know him personally, I did a movie with him. So I think he’ll be great, he’ll be great for Gambit, and he’s a southerner too, he’s not from New Orleans but he is a southerner and he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”
X-Men Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer has indicated that he was planning on bringing both Gambit and Nightcrawler into the mix for X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016, but this is the first official confirmation that Gambit will be bringing his card slinging ways to a cinema screen near you.
Gambit is one of the most popular and beloved X-Men characters of all time. With the news that Hugh Jackman is looking to make a graceful exit from the X-Men universe, I’m wondering if Gambit will kind of fill that niche left vacant by Hugh Jackman’s departure. I’m still not completely sold on Channing Tatum in serious works. He has this summer’s Jupiter Ascending coming out, but he’s never been someone that has really stood out to me in any of his other work. I’m looking in your direction, White House Down. All that being said, he was great in 21 Jump Street and my wife assures me that he was really good in Magic Mike, so maybe there’s more to him than meets the eye.
