20th Century Fox released two new trailers today for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The more I see of this movie, the more impressed I am. One of my biggest gripes with many modern blockbusters is that they all kind of look the same and, from a cinematographic standpoint, don’t stand out. So I really appreciate that director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) seems to have given the movie a really distinct and dark look. The effects works is something to behold. I’m curious to see how much of the monkey and ape work in this was done with real simians and how much was done digitally. The fact that one can’t tell is pretty impressive. Most importantly, while it’s too early to tell, I also like that the movie has political undertones about how two groups who want nothing more than to just live in peace can end up coming to blows due to what seems to be a gross misunderstanding of the other culture…and that whole virus wiping out humanity thing.
US released trailer:
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will invade theaters on July 11th, and stars Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and motion cap genius Andy Serkis.
