I hope the movie Birdman lives up to the promise of this trailer, because it’s one of the best trailers I’ve seen in a long time. If I’m reading the trailer correctly, Birdman tells the tale of a washed-up actor (Michael Keaton) who tries to shed the baggage associated with acting in an iconic movie franchise, while also dealing with losing one’s grip on reality. As one who suffers from a mild-case of superhero fatigue, I welcome any examination of that genre and I hope this has some interesting things to say on the genre and the actors who star in them. I like that the movie is filled with actors who have been associated with some pretty iconic movie franchises themselves: Michael Keaton (Batman and Beetlejuice), Edward Norton (The Incredible Hulk), and Emma Stone (the rebooted Spider-Man movies). Michael Keaton is, for my money, the most underrated actor from the 80s, and after a decade+ of doing fairly standard work, I’m glad he’s back making challenging movies. Although I have been mixed on Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s work (Babel, 21 Grams, Amores Perros), he is one of the more interesting directors working today and I’m looking forward to seeing what he has in store.
Birdman opens October 17, 2014, from Fox Searthlight Pictures and stars Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, and Emma Stone.
