Not a bad way to start a Thursday if I do say so myself. Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder released the first image of Henry Cavill as Superman for 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The image isn’t anything too groundbreaking, but (along with Zack Snyder quotes in the accompanying article) it does reveal some subtle hints about what to expect in the much anticipated team-up/versus movie. Man of Steel was very much an alien invasion movie, in which an orphaned alien saves Metropolis and all of humanity from certain death. This movie promises to be a lot more, for lack of a better word, grounded. All indications are that the main plot of this movie will be how Batman, Lex Luthor, and other DC players navigate the earth shattering (I’ll own that pun, too) reality that there are other forces in this universe that can’t be solved by a man putting on a bat cowl and beating up petty criminals. The picture shows a still stout Superman, but I detect a slightly colder demeanor on his face.
There are some good quotes in the piece, but this one really stood out to me:
Instead of using several movies to define Affleck’s Batman, Snyder felt the character’s 75-year mythology is so deep in culture now that they can just jump to an older, road-weary take on the Dark Knight. Plus, he says, “it’s cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys.”
This is perhaps the best news of all. There will no doubt be time for origin stories in future movies (probably standalone Batman movies), however I am beyond thrilled that they’re going to just jump right in with the character, using our collective memory of Bruce Wayne/Batman as its own origin story.
I know there are a lot of naysayers out there, but I’ve been pretty pumped by the early stuff WB, DC, and Snyder have been releasing thus far. 2016 can’t come soon enough.
