I was unaware they were making a Popeye animated movie, but am pretty excited that the spinach chomping, big forearmed character is making his way back to the screen. Sony Animation recently released some animated test footage that gives an idea what the look and pacing of the movie will be like (and perhaps to test the waters on how well received this character will be in 2014). I have to say that I’m fairly impressed. I’ve recently started showing my kids old Fleischer Popeye cartoons, so the character is fresh in my mind. The footage seems to capture the look and feel of those old cartoons, but with a slightly updated look. Since he played the character perfectly in Robert Altman’s Popeye, I wonder if Robin Williams was on Sony’s radar for doing the voice in this movie.
I was fairly lukewarm on Genndy Tartakovsky’s Hotel Transylvania but if there’s a bigger fan of his Samurai Jack out there than me, I’d like to meet them. A Tartakovsky directed Samurai Jack movie with the tools and backing of a major Hollywood studio is something I wistfully think about from time to time.
Popeye will be directed by Genndy Tartakovksy and released in 2016 by Sony Animation, but there are few other details out there about this movie.
