  • New THE HOMESMAN Trailer Released

    By | September 17, 2014

The summer movie seasons is long gone and it’s now time to get into the real reason we go to movies, namely well made movies that focus on all the stuff summer movies leave out: plot, masterful acting, well done cinematography, editing, writing, etc. Thanks for the summer fling, Ninja Turtles. It was fun, Michael Bay. But it’s time for the good stuff. This trailer for The Homesman is just what the doctor ordered for shedding those summertime movie blues.

Written and directed by, and starring Tommy Lee Jones, this movie paints what appears to be a realistic portrayal of the American West, as Hillary Swank’s Mary Bee Cuddy frees Tommy Lee Jones’s George Briggs from certain death and asks for his assistance in transporting three mentally unwell women across the American prairie, as they head to a mental asylum on the opposite end of the country. There looks to be a ton of great work in this trailer. Hillary Swank has been largely absent from movies in the past few years and this looks to be true return to form for her. When she’s good, there are few better. And Tommy Lee Jones looks born to play this part. The rest of the cast is rounded out with “lightweights” like Meryl Streep, John Lithgow, Tim Blake Nelson, James Spader, and Hailee Steinfeld.

I always worry that movies like this can be overwritten, but it looks like writers Tommy Lee Jones, Kieran Fitzgerald, and Wesley Oliver have threaded the needle between well done drama and sentimentality, with just a hint of gun-play action. But honestly, it’s cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Argo, The Wolf of Wall Street and Brokeback Mountain) who has me most excited for the movie. This movie looks impeccably shot.

The Homesman is set for release on November 7th.
